Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Eastern Maine provides mentors to hundreds
of
children who need additional support and friendship in their
lives. Mentors (Bigs) are volunteers, from students to
retirees, who share their time with children in our program.
Children and mentors are “matched” in one-to-one relationships
based upon compatible interests and personalities.
In an effort to serve more local children, Big Brothers Big
Sisters has expanded its options for volunteers! Individuals
interested in mentoring a child can now choose School-based
mentoring:
If you would enjoy the opportunity to mentor a child, but have
limited time during evenings and weekends, school-based
mentoring may be for you!
School-based Bigs meet with
children for one hour each week during the academic year.
Meetings are limited to the school setting. During weekly
visits, mentors and children play games, work on projects,
talk and read together.
Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors commit to participate for at
least one year. Most opt to remain in the program longer
simply because it’s FUN!
You do not need special skills or prior experience working
with children to become a Big Brother or Big Sister. If you
can offer friendship and encouragement to a child, you have
what it takes! The time you spend with a child in our program
can help him or her gain confidence, friendships and a better
outlook for the future.
