If
you’re interesting in mentoring a child, you can choose between two
programs:
Community Based Mentoring
Program
The community-based mentoring
program is designed to accommodate busy schedules. Mentors and
children get together, independently, in the community for an
average of six to ten hours each month. Bigs are encouraged to
include children in their everyday activities, from making
dinner to washing the car. What you actually do is not so
important – it’s doing it together that is!
School Based Mentoring Program
If you would enjoy the
opportunity to mentor a child but have no time during evenings
and weekends, school-based mentoring may be for you.
School-based Bigs meet with children for one hour each week
during the academic year. Meetings are limited to the school
setting. During weekly visits, mentors and children play games,
work on projects, talk and read together.
More Guidelines and Facts
ME? A BIG?
Yes, You! You do not need
special skills or prior experience working with children to
become a Big. If you can offer consistent friendship and
encouragement to a child, you have what it takes!
Here are the basic guidelines:
- To be a mentor in the
community-based program, you must be at least 18 years old and
have reliable transportation.
- To be a mentor in our
school-based program, you must be at least a sophomore in high
school, have reliable transportation, and be in good academic standing
(written permission from your parent/guardian is also
required if you are less than 18 years old).
- All Bigs commit to participate
for at least one year (calendar or school year). Most opt to
remain in the program longer, simply because it’s FUN!
Who are the Littles?
Littles are local kids, 7 to 14
years old, who need additional support and friendship in their
lives. Many of our Littles are living in single-parent homes.
Other than that, they are all unique individuals.
How will I be matched?
We take time to get to know
each Big and Little applicant before making a match. Bigs and
Littles are matched in one-to-one relationships based upon
compatible interests and personalities.
