20 June
2002 On June 6, I had the good fortune to attend "Adventure Day" at Camp
Beech Cliff. This was a culminating activity to celebrate a school year of
friendship for Conners/Emerson students and their mentors who have
participated in the school-based Big Brothers/Big Sisters program this year. Although it was raining that day, the beautiful facility at Camp
Beech Cliff and Vance O'Donnell's positive energy made for a day our
students will long remember. Watching our students eating lunch with their
'Bigs', playing games, and, climbing the 'wall" (all the while laughing and
hugging) warmed my heart. The citizens of Bar Harbor should be aware of the
commitment that has been made to the school based Big Brothers/Big Sisters
program by the members of this community. Over 30 Conners and Emerson
students were matched with a caring mentor during the 2001-02 school year. These
mentors spent one hour per week with a child during the school day. Each week
they would spend time together reading a book, talking, playing games, or
reviewing homework. Mentors for this program came from the First National Bank
of Bar Harbor, Bar Harbor Banking and Trust, MDI High School, College of the
Atlantic, Hadley Point Campground, the Bar Harbor Times, and the MDI Housing
Authority. In addition, we had one retired person and two employees of Big
Brothers/Big Sisters of Hancock County serve as mentors.
Thank-you Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Hancock County and all of our volunteer
mentors. Your efforts have made a huge positive impact in the lives of the
children of Bar Harbor.
Sincerely,
Carol Rosinski
